How to Fix Chipped Walls: A DIY Guide for Beginners

Hey there, DIY enthusiasts! 🌟 Are you looking at those pesky chipped spots on your walls and wondering how on earth to fix them?

Home Decor Living Room

Recently I had the same worry too, and I couldn't bear to look at those chipped walls, and with guests who visit for them to notice and criticize maybe at the end of the day. All I could do was blame the contractor for the shoddy work done.

This began my journey to research for quick fixes.

So don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place.

I will walk you through a simple way to make your walls look brand new again. Whether you’ve got a few nicks from moving furniture or a bit of damage from everyday wear and tear, this guide is perfect for beginners. Let’s get started!

What You’ll Need to fix chipped walls

Before we dive into fixing those chips, here’s a quick list of what you’ll need for this project:

  • Spackle or joint compound

  • Putty knife

  • Sandpaper (medium and fine-grit)

  • Primer

  • Paint (matching your wall color)

  • Paintbrush or small roller

  • Clean cloth or sponge

Got everything? Great! Let’s jump right in.

Step 1: Prep the Area

First things first, let’s make sure your wall is ready for repair.

Start by cleaning the chipped area with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt.

This helps the spackle adhere better and ensures a smooth finish.

Step 2: Fill the Chip

Now it’s time for the magic!

Grab your spackle or joint compound and use your putty knife to apply it to the chipped area. Push the compound into the chip, and then smooth it out. You want to fill the hole completely and create a flat surface that’s level with the rest of the wall.

Pro tip: If the chip is large, you might need to apply the spackle in layers, letting each layer dry before adding the next.

Step 3: Sand It Smooth

Once the spackle is completely dry (usually within a few hours), grab your sandpaper.

Start with medium-grit sandpaper to smooth out the area, then switch to fine-grit for a perfect finish. Sand until the surface is flush with the surrounding wall and free of any lumps or bumps.

Step 4: Prime the Area

To make sure your repair blends seamlessly with the rest of the wall, apply a coat of primer over the patched area.

Primer helps the paint adhere better and ensures an even color. Let the primer dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Paint the Wall

Finally, it’s time to paint!

Use a brush or small roller to apply the paint over the primed area. Try to blend the new paint with the old paint by feathering the edges. You might need to apply a couple of coats to match the surrounding wall perfectly.

Step 6: Clean Up

Once the paint is dry, take a step back and admire your handiwork! Clean your brushes and putty knife, and give the area one last check to make sure everything looks great.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Repair

  • For Larger Chips or Cracks: If the damage is extensive, consider using joint tape and joint compound for a more durable repair.

  • Choose the Right Paint: Make sure your paint is the same type (matte, eggshell, semi-gloss, etc.) as your existing wall finish for the best match.

  • Ventilation: Always work in a well-ventilated area, especially when using primers and paints.

And there you have it—a simple, step-by-step guide to fixing chipped walls like a pro! 🛠️ With a bit of patience and some basic tools, you can make those imperfections disappear and have your walls looking fresh and fabulous.
