This tear-shaped island, located south, packs a powerful impact. We're talking about exploring ancient kingdoms, spotting leopards in national parks, and relaxing on picture-perfect beaches.

My 10-day experience made me want more.

Nuwara Eliya: Where Time Slows Down in the Hills

My Sri Lanka Travel adventure began in the cool embrace of Nuwara Eliya, hidden between the hazy hills.

Picture this: emerald green tea plantations stretching as far as the eye can see, crisp mountain air stimulating your lungs, and a quaint colonial atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era.

Things to do in Nuwara Eliya

• Embark on a Tea Tour: Did you know, Srilanka, is one of the biggest exporters of tea, with a rich tea heritage , immerse yourself by visiting a working tea plantation. Learn about the meticulous process of tea production, from leaf to cup, and end your tour with a tasting of some of the world's finest teas. Don't forget to pack some for for your journey home
  

• Hike Through Lush Landscapes: Lace up your walking shoes and explore the scenic trails around Nuwara Eliya. Hike to Single Tree Hill for panoramic vistas of the emerald valleys and rolling tea estates.
  

• Unwind at Victoria Park: Victoria Park, a sprawling green oasis in the heart of the city, is the perfect place to relax and soak in the cool mountain air. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the manicured lawns, spot colorful birds, or have a picnic lunch amidst the scenic beauty. This place really gave me such a serene picturesque feeling, I could just sit here all day long
  

• Seek Spiritual Serenity at Seetha Amman Temple:  Seetha Amman is a colorful temple, located just outside Nuwara Eliya, dedicated to Goddess Sita, wife of Lord Rama in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Legend says this is where Sita was held captive by the demon king Ravana. Be sure to dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) when visiting, and remove your shoes before entering the temple grounds. Be sure to be respectful, and avoid carrying any eatables, as there are a lot of monkeys around
  

• Step Back in Time at the Governor's House: History buffs will appreciate a visit to the Governor's House, a colonial-era mansion that served as the official residence of the British Governors during the colonial period. Explore the grand rooms adorned with period furniture and artifacts, and learn about Sri Lanka's colonial past.
  

• Shop for Local Souvenirs: The Nuwara Eliya market is a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. Browse through stalls overflowing with colorful fabrics, handcrafted tea sets, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Don't forget to practice your bargaining skills!
  

Here are some tips to make the most of your Nuwara Eliya stay:

• Stay: For a touch of colonial history, check out the luxurious planters' bungalows dotting the hills. If you're on a budget, there are plenty of cozy guesthouses offering stunning views.
  

• Must-Have: A lightweight jacket or sweater – the evenings in Nuwara Eliya can get quite chilly, especially if you're coming from a hot climate.

Bentota Beach: Paradise Found & Relaxation Unmatched

I left the cold embrace of Nuwara Eliya and descended to the sun-drenched sands of Bentota Beach.

Imagine sliding your toes into the warm, golden sand, with turquoise seas lapping at your feet and palm trees swaying gently in the air.

Bentota is all about settling down and enjoying the island's relaxed attitude.

Here are some tips to make your beach days truly blissful:

• Stay: For a luxurious beachfront experience, check out Taj Bentota. They offer stunning ocean views, infinity pools, and impeccable service. On a budget? There are plenty of charming guesthouses and beach huts lining the shore.
  

• Water Sports Galore: Bentota caters to all water-loving souls. Try your hand at surfing, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even go on a diving or snorkeling trip to explore the vibrant coral reefs offshore.
  

• Boat Trip on the Bentota River: Embark on a scenic boat trip on the Bentota River, a great way to spot a variety of birds, including the majestic kingfishers and herons. Keep your eyes peeled for playful monkeys swinging through the mangroves!
  

Ps: Don't forget to stop your boat trip in the middle of the river, and enjoy fresh coconut water, to give you respite from the sweltering heat

• Support Local Businesses: For a truly authentic Sri Lankan meal, head to the nearby shacks. They serve up delicious fresh seafood curries and rice dishes that will tantalize your taste buds, plus they are affordable too.
  

• Must-Have: A good quality hat and reef-safe sunscreen are essential for those long days basking in the Sri Lankan sun.

Kandy: Unveiling the Heart of Sri Lankan Buddhism

From the seaside paradise of Bentota, I traveled inland to Kandy, Sri Lanka's spiritual and cultural center. This lively city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Temple of the Tooth, a revered Buddhist temple said to contain the Buddha's own tooth. Here are some highlights for experiencing Kandy's unique charm:

• Stay: For a truly immersive experience, consider staying at a homestay with a local family. This is a fantastic way to experience Sri Lankan hospitality firsthand and learn about their culture and traditions.

• Temple of the Tooth: The Temple of the Tooth is the crown jewel of Kandy. Be sure to dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) when visiting. The daily pooja (offering) ceremonies are a fascinating sight, filled with vibrant colors, rhythmic drumbeats, and the scent of incense.

Tip: The best time to visit Kandy is during the Esala Perahera festival held in July or August. This vibrant ten-day cultural extravaganza features a dazzling procession of elaborately decorated elephants, rhythmic drumbeats, fire dancers, and traditional Kandyan dancers adorned in vibrant costumes. However, keep in mind that accommodation prices tend to surge during this period, so book well in advance.

• Royal Botanical Gardens: Escape the rush and bustle of the city to the Royal Botanical Gardens, a huge paradise teeming with exotic flora and fauna. Take a leisurely stroll across the groomed grounds, admiring the massive orchid collection, and keeping an eye out for playful monkeys swinging among the trees. PS: Don't forget to carry hats, a bottle of water and wear comfortable shoes
  

• Must-Have: Comfortable walking shoes – Kandy is a walkable city, and you'll want to explore the charming streets and hidden alleyways at your own pace.

Colombo: A Bustling Capital with a Colonial Past

My Sri Lankan adventure culminated in the vibrant capital city of Colombo. Here, a fascinating blend of Dutch colonial architecture, trendy cafes, and bustling street markets jostle for your attention. Here are some tips to navigate Colombo's energetic streets:

• Dutch Period Museum: History buffs will love the Dutch Period Museum, showcasing Sri Lanka's colonial past through artifacts, exhibits, and period furniture.

• Pettah Market: Get lost in the labyrinthine alleyways of the Pettah Market, a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. Here you'll find everything from electronics and clothing to fresh produce and spices. Pro tip: Bargaining is expected, so don't be afraid to haggle for the best price!

• Street Food Delights: Colombo is a haven for street food lovers. Sample delicious kottu roti (shredded flatbread stir-fried with vegetables and meat), crispy samosas, and fragrant curries. Just be sure to stick to reputable vendors for food hygiene reasons.

• Must-Have: A reusable water bottle – staying hydrated is essential in Sri Lanka's hot climate. Purchasing a reusable bottle helps reduce plastic waste and saves you money on buying bottled water throughout your trip.
